Coughs and Colds

Coughs and cold are caused by viruses that we come into contact with everyday. The handles we touch, the shopping carts, and just about everything else we come into contact with can host these viruses. Washing your hands often and keeping them away from your eyes and mouth can go along way in preventing he spread of these nasty little germs. As awful as we feel when we have a cold, the only thing we can really do is to treat the symptoms. Antibiotics are not helpful in treating coughs and colds because they are caused by a virus, not a bacteria. So, do like your mom always said, drink your juice, eat your chicken noodle soup and rest. Contact your doctor if your cough or cold lasts for more than 2 weeks ( which is typically how long a virus takes to run its course), if you develop a fever higher than 100 degrees or if your cough or drainage is colored . If any of your symptoms worsen please contact your health care provider.
